Summary

Metal-detecting between 1994 and 2024 recovered an Early Neolithic flint arrowhead; Late Iron Age, Roman, Middle Saxon and medieval coins; a post-medieval token and a range of other, Late Iron Age/Roman to medieval metal objects. These metal finds include Late Iron Age/Roman brooches; Roman brooches, finger rings, a possible buckle and votive axehead; Early Saxon brooches; Middle Saxon pins and a hooked latch or clasp for box; Middle/Late Saxon brooches; a potentially Late Saxon finger ring; medieval dress accessories, horse-harness pendants and a possible leash swivel. Some finds from this site have been mixed with others from NHER 40117 - these poorly located items are recorded under NHER 40118.

Early Neolithic leaf-shaped flint arrowhead.
1 Late Iron Age coin.
Roman Langton Down brooch, finger ringer, possible buckle fragment and votive axehead.
1 Middle Saxon coin and 2 pins (S1).
2 Middle/Late Saxon disc brooches.
?Late Saxon finger ring of very unusual form.
Medieval buckle, strap end, annular brooch, 2 horse-harness pendants and a possible leash swivel.
1 post-medieval token.

The Early Neolithic arrowhead and Iron Age and Middle Saxon coins were initially mislaid and not seen by I&RS with the other objects. They were subsequently located and brought in for identification at a later date.

See NHER 40118 for details of finds known to have been recovered from the fields recorded as NHER 40116 and NHER 40117 during this time period but which were not kept separate. This large mixed assemblage includes Iron Age/Roman, Roman, Early Saxon, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon medieval and post-medieval objects. Items of particular note include a Roman kiln bar and a flue tile fragment.
