January 2011. Building Survey.
Level II historic building survey of Grange Farm barn prior to the proposed conversion of this structure.
The western wing of this building appears to have undergone a number of alterations to its form and function since construction in the 17th century. The lack of large openings suggests it was not used as a cart shed or threshing barn and it may have been used to house livestock. However, the early date makes it unlikely that it was originally built to shelter cattle as in the 17th century they would have been more likely wintered in the fields. The height of the roof could suggest it was originally built for storage of crops awaiting processing but this cannot be confirmed without further evidence of original openings. As suggested by E. Rose (see above) this building was converted around 1700 to accommodate a first and second floor and the upper floors may have been used as a granary at this time with possible cart storage beneath.
The eastern wing of this building is constructed from clay lump and is unlikely to date to before the late 18th century. It has also been modified but it is more likely that this building was constructed for the purpose of housing livestock as suggested by a three-quarter door. The eastern cell could easily accommodate a cart or similar equipment.
