Full Description
October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
There appears to be the cropmarks of a distinct double ditched linear feature visible on BKS aerial photographs from 1957 (S1). The ditches are between about 5-10m apart and run from ca. NGR TF9245 4301 to TF9269 4276. It seems likely that this is the remains of a road/trackway. The date of which is unknown. There is no sign of a road here on the 1st or 2nd edition OS maps (S2-3) or Faden’s map of Norfolk (S4) or Bryant's map of Norfolk (S5). However, it is parallel to the current road (in the main about 40-50m to the north-west) and the railway line. It runs along about halfway between them. It is possible that it is the line of a previous route of the road.
(However, one thing that must be taken into consideration is the fact that these features appear to run approximately from a corner of the field, so although they appear very clear and definite there is always the possibility that they are connected to more modern agricultural practice?)
H. Clare (NMP), 28 November 2002.
