Summary

Between 1980 and 2001 a number of finds were recovered along this section of the river bank, including a Neolithic flint scraper; Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; a medieval coin; undatable slag and animal bone and a number of other metal objects. The metal finds include a Late Saxon Urnes-style strap end; a ?medieval lead disc; post-medieval lead cloth seals and an undatable lead weight.

Finds from north bank of River Wensum.

1980. Stray Find.
Found by [1] on north bank of River Wensum at low tide, east of Fyebridge at approximately [2]:
1 Neolithic flint scraper.
3 Late Saxon pottery sherds (Thetford Ware).
10+ medieval pottery sherds.
1 undatable piece of slag and animal bone fragments.
Identified by W. Milligan (NCM), see notes in file [3].

1991. Metal-detecting.
Found by [4] on north bank of River Wensum, east of FyeBridge at [5]:
Late Saxon pottery sherds and Urnes-style strap end. Illustrated in (S1).
1 medieval coin and pottery sherds (including green-glazed Grimston).
1 ?medieval lead disc-shaped object (diameter 55-62mm with very clear underlined inscription on edge RAMPTVNE).
1 post-medieval pottery sherd (Lead Glazed Earthenware) and 2 lead cloth seals.
1 undatable lead weight and 1 iron nail.
Identified by S. Margeson [6]. See polaroids (S2).

One of the post-medieval cloth seals (Walloon 1615 onwards, issued in Norwich) was subsequently donated to Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1991.167 : A). Information from (S3).

1 Middle Saxon pottery sherd (Ipswich Ware lug).
This object was donated to the Norwich Castle Museum in July 2001 (NWHCM : 2001.260) but its original date of recovery is not recorded.
