Summary

A probable pillbox is visible as a surviving structure on aerial photographs from 1946. It appears to be circular or polygonal in plan but its exact form cannot be determined. While evidence of World War Two military activity has been recorded in the area (e.g. military training site NHER 38619), some of the military features may date back to World War One. A date in either period seems plausible for the pillbox, although a possible area of disturbed ground immediately to its north may suggest its use in World War Two. Later aerial photographs indicate that the structure was destroyed prior to 1963.

Map

June 2004, Norfolk NMP.
A probable pillbox is visible as a surviving structure on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 2210 3758. The aerial photographs are not clear enough to tell whether this was a circular structure likely to date to World War One or a polygonal building dating to World War Two. A patch of disturbed ground just to its north on the 1946 aerial photographs may indicate that it was at least in use during the latter period. At that time it lay between two military training areas (NHER 38619 and 38620).

The structure has an approximate diameter of 6m. Aerial photographs taken in 1963 indicate that it had been demolished prior to this date (S2).
