Summary

A ring ditch, possibly the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. It is located at the head of a dry valley which leads eastwards towards Mundesley Beck. Roughton Heath, where a number of Bronze Age round barrows have been identified, lies a short distance to the south.

Map

July 2004, Norfolk NMP.
A ring ditch, possibly a double ring ditch, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 2224 3982. Its morphology, topographical location and proximity to other prehistoric funerary sites suggests that it is likely to represent the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow. Nevertheless, the possibility that it dates from a different period or had a different function, or that it is associated with the agricultural cropmarks visible in this field on the same aerial photographs, cannot be discounted. Linear cropmarks which appear to radiate out from the ring ditch are probably of modern agricultural origin and have consequently not been mapped.

The ring ditch is slightly sub-circular in plan and measures up to 22.5m in diameter. Part of a possible second ring ditch, external and concentric to the first, is visible to its south. The projected diameter of the external ring ditch is approximately 30m. A large internal pit is visible towards the north side of the inner ring ditch. Although this appears too large to be an individual grave, if it does date to the Bronze Age it is likely to have been a burial pit or some other kind of mortuary feature. (S1)
