Full Description
July 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Part of an inter-tidal structure of unknown form or a possible wreck, of post medieval to modern date, is visible on aerial photographs on the beach near Ostend (S1). These remains are only visible on RAF aerial photographs dating to 1940. A straight section of structure or wreck is visible in the centre of the group with a broken line of possible posts or debris to its northwest. Other possible, but less certain, remains are located in the southeast part of the group. Due to the inter-tidal position of these remains their mapped location is only approximate, but they appear to be centred around TG 3693 3239. Historic mapping shows that this location would have lain at the foot of the cliffs in the late 1880s and been on land in 1834 ((S2) to (S3)). Consequently, the remains must date to some point between the mid 19th century and 1940. It is also possible that they somehow relate to World War Two training activity or the construction of coastal defences.
J. Albone (NMP), 19 July 2004.
