A series of probable Post-medieval drains and field boundaries and circular and rectangular stack bases, visible as low earthworks on 1947 RAF vertical aerial photographs.
There are a series of linear ditches aligned in approximately east to west and north to south directions, forming possible rectangular enclosures or fields (S1). There is a circular ring ditch at TF 6266 1735, which is probably the remains of a stack base. The feature has a diameter of 11m. There is a rectangular enclosure at TF 6269 1729, formed by a series of fragmentary ditches. The feature is aligned with its long axis in a south-west to north-east direction and has a length of 12m, and a width of 8m. This is probably also a stack base or stack enclosure. These features are probably all Late medieval or Post-medieval in date, situated on the newly reclaimed saltmarsh. It is possible that the rectangular stack enclosures post-date the circular ones, and are still in use in some 1940’s aerial photographs, although this is not certain.
M. Brennand (NMP), 29 May 2003.
