Full Description
June 2003. NMP.
There are two right-angled lengths of earthen bank visible in the centre of the site. Each has a stretch of east to west length of bank, which turn at right angles to the north and south at the western end. The northern bank turns to the north and southern bank turns to the south. These are possibly both land boundaries and flood defences, preventing the River Nar from flooding the area to the east. A medieval or post-medieval date is probable for these features.
There is a possible but indistinct circular feature at TF 6221 1800 (S1), formed by a pennanular earthen bank with the fragmentary traces of a narrow ditch on its outer side. The feature has a maximum diameter of 16.80m. This is probably a post-medieval stack stand, although it is not as clear as the examples to the immediate east within NHER 38235.
There is an irregular and curvilinear arrangement of ditches and a bank centred on TF 6218 1814. This may be the remains of a small irregular enclosure or an irregular mound of spoil surrounded by a ditch, but it may simply be the course of a former saltmarsh or fenland channel or drain.
M. Brennand (NMP), 13 June 2003.
