Map

June 2003. NMP.
The bank is visible for a length of 250m, aligned in an approximate north to south direction (S1). The southern end of the bank runs up to and appears to be truncated by the Eau Brink Cut of the River Great Ouse (NHER 13532), although this is probably relatively close to the original, un-canalised river bank at this point. The bank may of course post-date the river canalisation, although it is suggested that this is not the case. Within the central section of the bank there actually appears to be two parallel running earthworks, with a narrow ditch on the western side. On the western side of the southern end of the bank is a possible rectangular enclosure, formed a by a single ditch and with a possible raised area with the interior. The enclosure has its long axis aligned in a north to south direction and has a length of 41m and width of 17m. It is possible that the bank and the Eau Brink Cut (NHER 13532) both post-date the enclosure, but it cannot be ascertained with any certainty. This feature is one of numerous sea defence banks on the former western bank of the River Great Ouse it may be medieval or post-medieval in date.
M. Brennand (NMP), 25 June 2003.
