Full Description
July 2003. NMP.
There are traces of at least 13 circular features within the area (S1). The features range in diameter from 6m to 14m, and there are a variety of different forms visible, based around a similar design. Some appear as single ring ditches, while some appear as ring ditches with a raised inner bank or area and a central depression. Two features appear as raised rounded areas with no ditch, and the feature at TF 6320 1907 is sub-oval in plan, is slightly larger and appears to have rectangular pit or depression at its centre. These features are probably all stack bases, and are probably Post-medieval in date.
These stack bases appear to overlie a series of narrow and straight ridge and furrow type features, which have the appearance of large, un-harrowed plough furrows. These features are relatively widespread on the low-lying ground in this area and presumably represent a post-medieval agricultural practice on newly reclaimed and drained land in the area. There is a single linear bank at TF 6305 1911, which is probably a boundary but may simply be neat pile of spoil from ditch digging.
M. Brennand (NMP), 16 July 2003.
