Full Description
July 2003. NMP.
There are a series of approximately east to west aligned linear ditches visible, forming narrow strips of land (S1). These are similar, if not part of the same system as NHER 38232, to the immediate west. The ditches probably act as land boundaries and drains, and may be Late medieval or more likely Post-medieval in date. Within the ditched strips there are three circular features visible at TF 6239 1653, TF 6237 1659 and TF 6237 1662 (S1), formed by a narrow ringwork bank with a narrow ditch to the outside. The features range in diameter from 12m to 13m. These are probably the remains of stack stands, and are probably Post-medieval in date. There is an area to the north and south of the site that has ridge and furrow type earthworks, aligned in east to west directions. The features are relatively narrow and straight and appear more like large-scale lazybedding than classic medieval ridge and furrow. All of these feature probably represent early agriculture on the newly protected, reclaimed and drained saltmarsh, and probably date from the Later medieval or Post-medieval periods.
M. Brennand (NMP), 17 July 2003.
