Summary

In 2004 part of a human skull was found by landscape gardeners working in the garden of this property. The skull was of an elderly female of a pre modern date, perhaps medieval or earlier. The house here was bombed in World War Two and rebuilt afterwards and the bone fragment may have got into the garden as a result of the blast or in land clearance afterwards.

P. Watkins (HES), 6 September 2016.

June 2004. Stray Find.
Found by landscape gardeners working in garden.
Frontal portion of human skull. Skull found in dump of soil containing mid to late 20th century materials such as plastics, painted cement, etcetera, which occurred below skull as well as above.
Skull examined by Julie Curl (NAU), see (S1) in file; elderly female, heavily diseased mouth, worn teeth; certainly pre modern, perhaps medieval or earlier.
The house was bombed in World War Two and rebuilt afterwards. Some blocks of what may be limestone were noted in a garden wall. Probability is that the skull was part of a collection (suggested also by the limestone) and got into the garden as a result of the blast or in land clearance afterwards.
Home Office licence copy (S2) and photographs (S3) in file.
E. Rose (NLA) 25 June 2004.
