Full Description
Site of Villa Gardens public house, stated to have born datestone 1638 and to have been of similar appearance to Cuckoo Cottage (NHER 5289) and possibly by the same builder; also had an 18th century porch. Destroyed by bombing 1941. 17th century panelling in Bridewell Museum, formerly wrongly assigned to NHER 5289, removed earlier in 20th century and once in Norwich castle keep.
Site now occupied by caravan site.
Information from (S1).
E. Rose (NLA), 5 July 2004.
July 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Aerial photographs indicate that the building was still standing in 1945 (S2), so presumably just irredeemably damaged during the 1941 bombing raid rather than destroyed. See NHER 53380 for the resulting bomb craters. It is likely that these craters are the result of the two large bombs that fell on marshland near Lakenham Swimming Baths in May 1941 (S3).
S. Horlock (NMP), 01 July 2010.
