Full Description
August 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of ditches, field boundaries, pits and possible structures, of unknown and medieval to post medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1 and 2). These cropmarks, which are centred on TG 3665 2981, were previously recorded as part of NHER 21773. Four ditches are present on a roughly north to south alignment conforming to the post medieval field pattern. Although none of the mapped ditches represent boundaries shown on the 1841 East Ruston tithe map (S3) or later maps, it is likely that they are also medieval to post medieval field boundary ditches. An intermittent west to east aligned ditch is present between TG 36720 29795 and TG 36800 29800. The apparent junction of this ditch with a rectilinear enclosure (NHER 38734) is probably deceptive and it is likely to continue to meet the easternmost north to south ditch at TG 36788 29800 where it is obscured by hollow way (NHER 38718). In the western part of this group of cropmarks, at TG 36535 29790 are two undated pits. The westernmost of these is sub rectangular in plan and measures 10m by 4m and could represent a structure. It is aligned broadly parallel to the possible medieval to post medieval field boundary ditches and may be of contemporary date. The second pit has an irregular plan and measures 5m by 4m. Two northwest to southeast and southwest to northeast aligned ditches are also present in the western part of this group of cropmarks. The date of these ditches is uncertain, although their alignment is similar to that of ditches 190m to the northeast (NHER 38748).
(S1 to 3).
