Full Description
August 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of rectilinear enclosures, a trackway and ditches, possibly forming part of an extensive Iron Age to Roman field system, are visible on aerial photographs (S1). This group of cropmarks is centred on TG 3730 2925. Three adjoining rectilinear enclosures are present in the northern part of the group around TG 3728 2928. They are aligned roughly north to south and west to east and measure 90m long (west to east) by 40m to 50m wide (north to south). Two gaps in the western boundary ditches of the enclosures possibly represent simple entrances. Two inturned entrances and a further possible simple entrance are present on the eastern side of the enclosures. Ditches extending south and east from the eastern side of the enclosures, suggest a continuation of the site in these directions. West to east aligned ditches running parallel to the south side of the enclosures possibly represent a trackway leading into the southernmost enclosure. The enclosures recorded in this group of cropmarks share a similar alignment to a trackway and field system recorded 800m to the north (NHER 38730) and field boundary cropmarks 420m to the west (NHER 38723) indicating that they are probably part of a much more extensive field system. However, their alignment is also similar to that of a medieval to post medieval field system to the southwest (NHER 38599). The enclosures in the northern part of this group are crossed by a possible trackway and field boundaries of possible prehistoric date (NHER 38725).
