Summary

A possible polygonal enclosure, perhaps a stack stand, of unknown date is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. It is surrounded by the cropmarks of at least two field systems, one of which (NHER 38808) may date to the Roman period, the other (NHER 38807) dates to the post-medieval period. It seems likely that the enclosure, like the small ring ditches to its north (NHER 38804-6), is associated with one or other of these field systems but it is not clear which. Given its location and small size this enclosure, like the ring ditches, probably represents a stack stand or other agricultural feature, but alternative interpretations cannot be ruled out.

Map

September 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A small polygonal enclosure is visible as a cropmark on an aerial photograph (S1), centred at TG 2373 3915. It could date to any period but an association with either of the two field systems which surround it (NHER 38807 and 38808) is likely. Given this postulated relationship its interpretation as a stack stand seems plausible. A number of ring ditches to the north (NHER 38804-6) are likely to represent more conventional forms of such features.

The enclosure measures up to 25.5m long and 14m wide. It is open on its west side, a characteristic which appears to be genuine but could be due to the cropmark being masked. It should be noted that the cropmark was only just visible on the edge of an oblique aerial photograph (S1), and that consequently there is a relatively high risk of it being the product of geology or agricultural activity rather than an archaeological feature.
