Summary

A possible polygonal enclosure of unknown date is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. The site lies 350m to the south-west of an undated group of enclosures with distinctive annexes which were probably used for pastoral activity, as sheepfolds for example (NHER 13064). The enclosure described here might be another example of this type of enclosure. Alternatively it could form part of either of two field systems, one possibly dating to the Roman period, the other to the post-medieval period, identified to its east and northeast (NHER 38808 and 38807 respectively). A third alternative is that it is an entirely unrelated site. At the same time, the cropmarks are not particularly clear and their archaeological origin is therefore uncertain.

A possible enclosure is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1 to S2), centred at TG 2367 3816. Although it lies close enough to the group of postulated sheepfolds to its east (NHER 13064) to be an associated feature, it lacks the distinctive morphology of these enclosures. It seems more likely to form part of the possibly Roman period field system visible over the same area (NHER 38808) but is crossed by a ditch which seems to form part of the latter site suggesting that the two are not contemporary. At the same time there is no evidence to suggest that the enclosure formed part of the post medieval landscape. The fact that the cropmarks are not particularly clear and only partially visible on both aerial photographs indicates that, like many of the linear marks which surround it, the enclosure may be a product of agricultural activity rather than a genuine archaeological feature.

The possible enclosure, which is defined by a narrow (2m wide) ditch, is polygonal in plan. It measures approximately 85m long and 45m wide. Breaks in the ditch circuit are more likely to be caused by the cropmark being masked than by genuine entrances or gaps.
