Map

October 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A pair of World War Two circular concrete structures, possibly gun emplacements, are located on the cliff top above the western end of Cromer Esplanade (S1 and S2). The site is centred on TG 2128 4244. The two structures have the appearance of having circular concrete bases, both are 3m in diameter and 4m apart. On an oblique aerial photograph from 1941 at least one protruding vertical rods or bars is visible within the center of one of the structures (S2). This may have been a gun hold fast for a light machine gun or some sort. The whole of the Cromer cliffs and promenade was protected by pillboxes and gun emplacements during the Second World War, which formed a continuous line of defence (NHER 32572, 38849 to 51, 38857 to 8, 38864 and 38873).
