Full Description
October 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two fieldwork trench and circular pit may be visible in 1941 cut into a partially wooded knoll, formerly known as Drake Hill, see NHER 17975 for details. The site is centred on TG 2013 4237 and consists of a circular depression, 6m in diameter, with a slight upcast bank to the south. To the immediate east of this is a shallow trench U-shaped trench, up to 3m wide, and dug into a slope to the south. These excavated features look extremely fresh in 1941 and have a similar appearance to other military trenches of this period (S1). By June 1946 the area has been more extensively quarried (S2) and therefore no further inspection of the features can be made. It may however indicate that the quarry pit was in regular use during the early 1940s, which may in turn suggest that the mapped features may be actual quarrying rather than trench digging.
See (S1-2).
