Full Description
October 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A possible area of World War Two practice trenches and weapons pits is visible on aerial photographs in an area of former sand pits to the north of Mill Lane, East Runton (S1). The site is centred on TG 2054 4225 and is now a nursery. The clearest area of probable trenches is located at TG 2055 4229. These include two L-shaped ditches, the longest being 11m long, and a series of small pits and ditch segments, 1-1.5m long, dug in linear arrangements. These are to the north of a relatively recent sand pit and therefore it is possible that these features are not military in origin. However the morphology and freshness of the earthworks in 1941 would indicate that they are the result of military training exercises (S1). The cut areas are also all quite small and irregular for extraction purposes.
To the south, centred on TG 2054 4222, is an area of rough and disturbed ground, which has been defined on the NMP map by an extent of area. It is possible that further military training features exist within this area, although nothing definite could be identified. Two 1-2m wide bank sections were visible, although the date and origin of these is not known and may well relate to previous extraction rather than World War Two activity. A sunken path cuts through this area and was not mapped, as this is likely to be a relatively modern access trackway.
