Map

November 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two type 22 pillbox located on the seafront to the immediate south of the Cromer Emergency Coastal Battery on the cliff top (S1 to S3). This structure forms part of a much wider area of World War Two coastal defences along the cliffs and beach at Cromer (NHER 32566 to 7, 38912 and 38916). To the north of this pillbox, cut in to the cliff, are possible searchlights or gun emplacement relating to the coastal battery above.

The pillbox is centred on TG 2275 4196 and is visible on oblique aerial photographs from 1940 (S1). This hexagonal pillbox can be seen on aerial photographs to have an open top for the back (landward) side of the structure. This is likely to relate to a gun emplacement originally positioned on the top. Although no such feature is visible on the aerial photographs. Therefore it is possible that it relates to an access to the structure. The entire pillbox has either been destroyed or removed by 1946 (S5).
