Summary

A World War Two pillbox is visible as a standing structure on aerial photographs taken in June 1946. It may be absent from or hidden on an earlier set of photographs taken in 1942. It lay within a field boundary and overlooked the new road through Trimingham which was constructed between 1942 and 1946. In fact, the construction of the road and the pillbox might have been associated events. The pillbox clearly formed part of the extensive World War Two coastal defences which were erected in this area, many of which have also been identified and mapped from aerial photographs (e.g. NHER 38936). It appears to have survived until at least 1955 but was demolished by 1965, probably during the construction of the housing development which now occupies this area.

Map

November 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two pillbox is visible as a standing structure on aerial photographs taken in 1946 (S1), centred at TG 2808 3869. It is not visible on an oblique aerial photograph taken in June 1942 (S2) but could have been hidden by vegetation or camouflage. It was demolished by 1965 (S3), probably during the construction of the housing development which now surrounds the site. It is likely to have been polygonal in plan but has been mapped as a circular feature as its form is not clear on the consulted aerial photographs. It measured up to 4.5m in diameter.
The site may equate to that of an unknown type of pillbox, known to be demolished, which is listed in a gazetteer published in 1999 (S4). The grid reference for the site (TG 2815 3864) places it approximately 80m east-south-east of the pillbox described here, but close enough to be plausible as the same site. (There is no pillbox visible on aerial photographs at the grid reference given in the gazetteer).
