Summary

A ring ditch of unknown date is visible as a slight earthwork and as a cropmark on aerial photographs. It encloses what appears to be a low mound, cut by a modern drainage ditch, and is located on low-lying ground on the floodplain of Fox's Beck. The function and date of the site are unknown. It could represent a low-lying Bronze Age round barrow, a stack stand sited in what was once presumably meadow land, a feature associated with drainage such as a sluice, or even a more ornamental feature associated with the site of Thorpe Hall (NHER 6764) 700m to the south-west. It is notable that the interpretation of a ring ditch identified close to the hall (NHER 36485) is similarly open to question.

Map

November 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A ring ditch and a probable internal mound are visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-2), centred at TG 2509 3573. There is no dating evidence or other archaeological features associated with the mound and a number of interpretations are possible. Its low-lying position and relatively 'crisp' appearance perhaps suggest that it is unlikely to be a Bronze Age round barrow. Its association with drainage or agricultural/pastoral activity seems more plausible given its location; its survival as a slight but distinct earthwork into the 20th century, despite the excavation of extensive drainage works and presumably the deposition of material through flooding, may indicate a post-medieval date. The site was under plough in 1988 and has presumably been levelled.

The ring ditch is circular in plan and measures approximately 25.5m in diameter. The mound is also circular in plan and measures approximately 22.5m in diameter.
