Map

December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of probable post medieval garden and landscape features are visible on aerial photographs (S1) within the grounds of Overstrand Hall (NHER 6478). The site is centred on TG 2412 4088. A linear hollow, measuring up to 4m wide is visible running from TG 2410 4091 to TG 2411 4084. This earthwork may have related to a former boundary of the garden layout or possibly a path through the grounds. Although it is feasible that this wide ditched linear is associated with the layout of an earlier hall at this location, see NHER 6478 for details. The second earthwork consists of a curvilinear raised embankment, centred on TG 2413 4091, 28m long and 4.5m wide. This appears to be defining the former edge of an area of planting and appears more definitely to be associated with this phase of the hall and grounds. In 1946 the feature looks quite fresh, although this may be due to the cleaning of an earlier garden feature during garden maintenance, as much of the gardens are showing signs of recent work. Although it is also possible that it is quite late in the design of the grounds.
