Summary

Undated and post medieval field boundaries and trackways are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Some features may be related to the possible Iron Age ditched boundary (NHER 31746) recorded within the area of the cropmarks. These and/or others could be associated with a possible Iron Age/Roman field system located to the west (NHER 38961). Some of the cropmarks appear on historic maps or fit the pattern of features illustrated on the maps, indicating that they are of post medieval date.

Map

January 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Field boundaries, in the form of ditches and trackways, of unknown and post medieval date are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs ((S1) to (S4)), centred around TG 2794 3605. Various different phases of activity are evident at the site. Some elements, such as the northwest to southeast aligned ditches visible from TG 2743 3610 to TG 2754 3603, may be part of the possibly Iron Age to Roman system identified to the west (NHER 38961), although they might equally be post medieval in date. Others, such as the ditch aligned almost north to south between TG 2822 3624 and TG 2815 3603, fit the pattern of enclosure depicted on historic maps (for example, (S5)) and are therefore likely to be of post medieval date. Several ditches and a possible trackway are aligned eastnortheast to westsouthwest or perpendicular to this alignment; these appear to form a distinct group but their date is unknown.

The cropmarks are visible across an area measuring approximately 875m by 430m. A multiple ditched boundary (NHER 31746), which probably dates to the Iron Age, and a possible ring ditch (NHER 39018) have been identified from cropmarks over the same area.
