Full Description
December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two pillbox, probably a Type 22, is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S1-2), centred at TG 3224 3522. The earliest consulted aerial photographs on which it is clearly visible date to 1946 (e.g. S1), but it may have been constructed by January 1943 (S3). It had been demolished by April 1967 (S4); the surrounding hedges were presumably grubbed up at the same time, a process that was perhaps linked to the construction of Bacton Gas Terminal to the south-east. The pillbox occupies a fairly typical location for such structures, hidden within the junction of two field boundaries (now gone). It may have been deliberately sited to overlook the tracks to its north and south.
