Summary

Two World War Two bomb craters are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken on 4th January 1943. Despite a covering of snow, they appear to be relatively fresh earthworks at this date and the bombs had presumably been dropped fairly recently, some time after the field was last ploughed. It is not clear what target they were intended for. There are a number of World War Two military installations in the surrounding area, such as the radio countermeasures station (NHER 38977) 750m to the north-west or Mundesley coastal battery (NHER 14142) 530m to the north-east. The extensive defences surrounding Mundesley, or the railway (NHER 13585) which runs to the north and east of the site, are other possible targets. Alternatively, the bombs might have been dropped at a random location by an enemy plane prior to making its return flight across the North Sea.

Map

December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Two World War Two bomb craters are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1-2), centred at TG 3053 3669. The fact that they appear to be relatively fresh earthworks in January 1943 (S1) suggests that they were created in the preceding few months. Various possible targets exist in the area, which was the location of several military installations and was also heavily defended during World War Two. The craters lie approximately 45m apart and measure up to 13m in diameter. They are visible as cropmarks and possibly slight earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1946 (S2) but have since been entirely levelled.
