Map

March 2003. Visit.
Cosy Cottage is one of the inner properties in a row of four brick and flint cottages that face west. A date stone on the front elevation reads 'Date 1807 Wm Carey', and there are two initial stones: J.B. and W.C.J. There is a straight joint in the brickwork above the front door suggesting a different division of the property in the past. There is a local tradition that this building was a tithe barn, but Norfolk Historic Buildings Group found no evidence for this. The original structure appears to date from the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. The brick jointing outside, the fireplace and doors are all consistent with a remodelling in 1807.

Originating as a barn or warehouse behind and belonging to Lovell's Stores the building of which this cottage forms a part, though late 17th or early 18th century in date, is not documented until 1825 when it is described as a barn with a stable and yard. By 1849 it had become four cottages with butcher's shop, stable and hayhouse. The 1807 date stone may have been repositioned from the upper part of one of the gable ends which seem to be late 19th century rebuilds. The other reset date stones are unexplained. Since New Buckenham was largely tithe free, the suggestion that this was a tithe barn can be dismissed.
