Summary

A possible ring ditch, perhaps the remnants of a small Bronze Age barrow or of a Bronze Age to Iron Age round house, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. Other ring ditches (NHER 12805 and 39064), which may also be of later prehistoric date, have been identified a few hundred metres to the north-west. The ring ditch is also situated close to areas of multi-phase field boundaries, identified to its north-east (NHER 39068) and north-west (NHER 39065 and 38933). Parts of these may date back to the Iron Age or Romano-British period. At the same time, the ring ditch is visible on only one set of aerial photographs. Numerous other cropmarks of modern or geological origin are visible in the surrounding area, some of which may be associated with its use as a golf course. The possibility that the ring ditch is non-archaeological in origin cannot therefore be ruled out.

Map

December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A possible ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 3003 3666. If it is of archaeological origin, it seems most likely to represent the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow or a prehistoric to Iron Age round house. Similar interpretations have been put forward for ring ditches mapped to the north-west (NHER 12805 and 39064). Given its location within a golf course, however, and the numerous modern and geological cropmarks visible in the surrounding area, its archaeological origin is uncertain.

The ring ditch is slightly sub-circular in plan and measures up to 8m in diameter. It is not known whether the break on the northwest side of the ditch circuit represents a genuine entrance or is a product of the cropmark be masked.
