NHER 38326 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Possible Saxon to medieval iron working site

An area of pit remains relating to the iron working taking place on the site can just be seen on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S1). These are located to the east of 'Roman Camp' and area centred on TG1851 4140. The area has some tree cover, which in part obscures much of the site. Due to this, the area has been plotted as an extent of area only (no individual pits were clear enough to map on their own). It is also possible that the area of iron working extends beyond the bounds of that plotted, but this could not be determined due to the tree cover. The date of much of the site is uncertain, however, similar nearby sites seem to be Late-Saxon to medieval in date, which therefore seems likely.
The whole site is centred on TG1845 4141, as it also includes the probable Late-Saxon/medieval iron working pits previously excavated in 1964 (see Tylecote 1967 (S2)) and located to the west side of 'Roman Camp' (not visible on the aerial photographs).
This site was previously recorded under NHER 6387 (along with 'Roman Camp').
