Full Description
December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A group of undated linear ditch cropmarks, which may represent field boundaries and trackways, is visible on aerial photographs to the east of Gurney’s Plantation and the treatment Works at East Runton, near the parish boundary with Cromer. The site is centred on TG 2052 4191. These cropmarks are quite hard to discern and identify from amongst the more dominant cropmarks formed by the glacially derived geology. It is possible that some of the cropmarks mapped are also geological in origin and have been misinterpreted due to them having linear or rectilinear elements.
Several of the linears mapped appear to have double-ditched elements, some of these may be defining trackways. The two southern double ditches may well be a continuation of one another approximately 90m apart. The north of the site is a much more regular parallel ditch arrangement, running from TG 2048 4197 to TG 2049 4192, which appears to be perpendicular to a series of fragmentary ditches. These may mark former field boundaries. Similarly fragmentary arrangements of linear ditches in the area have also been interpreted as field boundaries (NHER 39140, 39142).
