Full Description
December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
A series of roughly parallel linear ditches, which are visible as cropmark on aerial photographs and situated along the cliff top, East Runton (S1). The date of these is unknown and it is also possible that these have a recent and agricultural or military origin. The site is centred on TG 2065 4247. Two of the linears are parallel and quite closely set, possibly defining part of a trackway, running from TG 2061 4246 to TG 2066 4245. A further linear runs from TG 2073 4244 to TG 2069 4245 and another intermittent set of linear cropmarks run from TG 2063 4249 to TG 2058 4252.
The archaeological origin of these features is not definite as there are a variety of agricultural marks obvious in the field. Nearby fields are also showing signs of harvesting so it is possible that these linears are caused by a person or vehicle crossing the field. There is also a significant amount of contemporary military activity taking place in the area, which may also have accounted for disturbance in the crop. The aerial photographs are laser copies of quite poor 1941 photographs and therefore the features mapped cannot be seen particularly clearly.
