Full Description
December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of post medieval and undated field boundaries and other ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3350 3343. Field boundary ditches of post medieval date, which are marked on the Bacton enclosure map (S2), are present among this group of cropmarks. These include a north north west to south south east aligned ditch between TG 3341 3351 and TG 3349 3327. Parallel to this ditch, and also depicted on the 1827 map, is the western boundary of a trapezoidal field extending from TG 3352 3334 to TG 3349 3348. The northern continuation of this ditch is not marked on the map. The ditch defining the southern boundary of this field, between TG 3352 3334 and TG 3359 3334, appears to continue the line of an extant drain to the east of Sandy Lane. A small group of rectilinear enclosures or fields in the north of the group of cropmarks at TG 3350 3354 are probably broadly contemporary with the field boundaries, but are not marked on the maps examined. A roughly southwest to northeast aligned ditch at TG 3353 3348 appears to divided the northern end of the trapezoidal field and may be contemporary with the other post medieval field boundaries. Another ditch cropmark, also on a southwest to northeast alignment, at TG 3355 3342 does not appear to be related to the post medieval field pattern and is undated.
