Summary

Two probable slit trenches dating to World War Two are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. They lie within the grounds of a house (now known as Jen-Bar Lodge), close to a trackway which leads westwards from Stow Hill to the road between Knapton and Mundesley (the B1145) and the former Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Railway (NHER 13585). They appear to be relatively fresh earthworks in 1940, indicating that they were only recently constructed. Although extensive World War Two defences have been identified in the surrounding area (e.g. NHER 39109), the relative isolation of these features, on a minor trackway, suggests that they might represent training activity rather than an integrated element of the coastal defences.

Map

December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
Two probable slit trenches are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1-3), centred at TG 1984 4211. These rather isolated earthworks, which appear to be recently constructed on photographs taken in 1940 (S1), seem most likely to represent military training rather than strategic defence. A circular or polygonal structure, visible at TG 3149 3573 on photographs taken between 1946 and 1968 (e.g. S3-4), could be a pillbox, but its location (surrounded by farm buildings) and its long survival indicate that an agricultural function is more likely. The trenches are not visible on recent aerial photographs and have presumably been levelled.
