Full Description
December 2004. Norfolk NMP.
The site of a slight circular earthwork platform, of unknown date, is visible on aerial photographs on the edge of a playing field, Cromer (S1 and S2). The feature is partly located within the wooded boundary of Warren Woods. The origin and date of this feature is not known, although it appears to be relatively recent, probably dating to the post medieval period. However it is possible that the feature dates to the World War Two activity in the area and may be the base of a former gun emplacement, partly camouflaged amongst the trees. Other World War Two defences exist in the vicinity, including a pillbox to the west (NHER 32567) and the Emergency Coastal Battery to the north (NHER 32566).
The site is centred on TG 2257 4172 and the circular feature measures 6.5m in diameter. A possible slight outer ditch may be visible. A possible central depression may be visible in the June 1946 aerial photographs (S1). The ground around the site appears slightly worn and therefore would indicate some recent use, although the earthworks do not appear obviously fresh.
S. Massey (NMP), 29 December 2004.
