Full Description
January 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two roadblock is visible as at least two parallel linear marks across Links Road on aerial photographs (S1-2), centred at TG 3091 3662. The photographs are not clear enough to allow a definite interpretation of the form of the roadblock, but the parallel white lines might mark the sockets for anti-tank rails, either bent or straight. Alternatively they might mark the position of horizontal barriers or wire placed between the walls to either side of the blockade. The linear marks are comparable to a second World War Two roadblock (NHER 39179) located 760m to the south-east. Stronger white marks, which also appear to have some height, visible towards the south side of the bridge may show the location of anti-tank blocks or similar concrete structures. Like other roadblocks identified in the area, the site might have been constructed purely as an anti-tank obstacle for use in the event of an invasion, but could also have been used to control the movement of both military personnel and civilians in and out of the heavily defended stronghold of Mundesley. No evidence of the roadblock is visible on later aerial photographs.
