Summary

A small group of concrete anti-tank blocks dating to World War Two is visible as extant structures on wartime aerial photographs. The blocks are sited at the western end of the seafront promenade, presumably to inhibit access to and from the beach, whether by an invading force or civilians. Other tank traps are visible blocking the slipways leading from the beach to the cliff top (NHER 39182). The blocks on the promenade appear to have been removed after the war but subsequently may have been incorporated into nearby sea defences (see NHER 32620).

Map

January 2005. Norfolk NMP.
World War Two anti-tank blocks are visible as extant structures on aerial photographs (S1-3), centred at TG 3132 3686. They are sited at the western end of Mundesley promenade, presumably to impede access between the beach and the town on the cliff above. Only one is visible in 1940 (S1), while three can be seen in 1941 (S2-3), although none of the photographs are clear enough to be certain of their identification. Later aerial photographs demonstrate that they were removed after the war. Some of the anti-tank cylinders identified within the sea defences immediately adjacent to the site (NHER 32620) may be the structures visible on the aerial photographs.
