Summary

A World War Two roadblock is visible as a group of anti-tank blocks or other concrete structures on aerial photographs taken between September 1940 and July 1946. It controls the main coast road into Mundesley from the west, and is one of at least three roadblocks to have been erected on access routes into the town during the war. These all form part of a more extensive network of coastal defences that has been identified along this stretch of coastline, which was heavily protected during World War Two.

Map

January 2005. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two roadblock is visible as a group of anti-tank blocks or similar concrete structures on wartime aerial photographs (S1-3), centred at TG 3077 3701. The NMP mapping shows the site as it looked in 1940 (S1), when it consisted of at least four blocks or structures, two on each side of Cromer Road. Rails or strands of wire were presumably placed across the c. 4.5m gap between the blocks to form a blockade. By 1941 (S2) only one block is visible on each side of the road. In July 1946 (S3) two blocks are visible on the north side of the road. These are probably the two concrete cubes recorded at the Grand Hotel (S4-5). They may subsequently have been moved to the east side of the hotel, where six anti-tank cubes still lie on the verge (NHER 32621). The northernmost of two nearby spigot mortar emplacements (NHER 39189) may have been sited to cover the roadblock.
