Summary

Two probable World War Two gun emplacements, perhaps for spigot mortars, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. The northernmost overlooks Cromer Road, the main coastal road into Mundesley from the west, which was controlled by a roadblock (NHER 39181) during the war. The southern emplacement overlooks the former Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Railway (NHER 13585). Both form part of an extensive network of World War Two coastal defences that has been identified along this strip of coastline, which was heavily protected during the war.

Map

January 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Two probable World War Two gun emplacements, perhaps for spigot mortars, are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1-2), centred at TG 3080 3698. They appear to be sited to overlook Cromer Road and its wartime roadblock (NHER 39181) to the north and the former railway (NHER 13585). They are most clearly visible on aerial photographs taken in 1946 (e.g. S1) but the northernmost emplacement, at least, may be visible on earlier aerial photographs (S2). Both are visible as a low, horseshoe-shaped bank, surrounding a small, concrete structure, perhaps the 'thimble' for a spigot mortar. Neither is visible on later aerial photographs.
