Full Description
February 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Two possible World War Two military structures may be visible on aerial photographs behind the Marram Hills dunes at Waxham Sands (S1). The site is centred on TG 4543 2500. These two structures are not of definite military origin and a detailed description cannot be given due to the lack of aerial photograph evidence. The structures are only visible as two mounds, which have the appearance of being covered with vegetation. It is possible that they are not manmade structures and rather represent dune vegetation, although the shadows seem too well defined. The larger, southern structure measures approximately 6m across and the smaller structure is up to 4m across. No obvious military structures are visible in oblique aerial photographs from 1940 (S2 and 3), although it is possible that they were constructed later or are camouflaged amongst the dune vegetation. There are several pillboxes and sections of barbed wire defended the beach access through the dunes to the north (NHER 27246-7, 27252) and therefore this may indicate these are military in origin also. A possible World War Two slit trench is also located to the east NHER (27250).
