Full Description
March 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Linear ditches are visible as cropmarks and soilmarks on aerial photographs (S1-3), centred at TG 4775 1513. A possible trackway, visible between TG 4783 1516 and TG 4767 1515 appears to lead towards an embanked enclosure (NHER 30626) mapped further to the west, although short linear ditches visible within (and in some cases perpendicular to) the trackway mean that this interpretation is far from certain. Numerous finds dating from the Bronze Age onwards have been recovered from the vicinity (e.g. NHER 32036), but none are known to be directly associated with the cropmarks. Nevertheless, a medieval to post-medieval date for the postulated trackway seems plausible. Other linear features mapped over the same area may represent drainage ditches and/or field boundaries. Some, such as the east-to-west aligned ditch just to the south of the trackway, could be contemporary features. Others, such as the two, long linear ditches which cut across the site at an angle to the trackway, may relate to a later phase of activity or may even be modern in origin. Other, unmapped cropmarks visible on the same aerial photographs to the north and south and of the mapped features are indistinguishable from modern agricultural marks.
