Map

March 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Rifle butts and World War Two defences including barbed wire and weapons pits are visible on contemporary aerial photographs (S1-5). These features are centred on TG 3333 3488. The rifle butts are positioned parallel to the cliff top at TG 3342 3481. They comprise of a rectangular earth bank measuring 43m long by 13m wide flanked by 10m wide ditches along its length. These rifle butts were present by 5 September 1940 (S1-2) and do not appear to have been recently constructed at that date. It is possible that this is a World War One rifle range that was reused during World War Two. By July 1941 narrow linear earthwork banks had been constructed along its southwest (landward) side (S3).

Barbed wire defences were present along the cliff top, either side of the rifle range in 1941 and 1943 (S3-4). Weapons pits were also present to the northwest and southeast of the range by 1943. A rectangular building of possible military origin was located at TG 3312 3504 by June 1946 (S5). These World War Two defences continue from NHER 39150 to the northwest and NHER 27290 to the southeast.
