Full Description
March 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of medieval to post medieval field boundary and drainage ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1-3). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3492 3277. Several overlapping phases of ditches are visible as cropmarks.
A curving double-ditched field boundary in the northern part of the group extends for 200m between TG 3486 3296 and TG 3502 3285. A rectangular field with internal dimensions of 95m by 73m is present on the eastern side of the group. The ditch forming its northern side continues to its west for a further 110m. Dividing this field in half is another roughly west to east aligned ditch, which appears to belong to a different phase of activity. Three ditches on northwest to southeast and southwest to northeast alignments are present in the central part of this group of cropmarks. These represent a third phase of activity and may be of an unknown earlier of later date. Ditches in the southern part of the group appear to join the surviving post medieval field boundaries. It is likely that these ditch cropmarks are of medieval to post medieval date and that they relate to land division and water management associated with the adjacent priory site (NHER 1073).
