Summary

Evaluation work undertaken in 2005 in an area of proposed development discovered sealed features probably dating to the prehistoric and Roman periods, although there is a chance that the contexts may be associated with the later medieval settlement nearby. Animal remains, flaked flint and Roman pottery were found in association with a ditch, pit and post hole.

Map

March-April 2005. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation carried out within the footprint of a proposed residential development. Contexts 1-38.
Five evaluation trenches were excavated, four of which contained archaeological features and deposits. The archaeological features were sealed by subsoil deposits and probably date from the Prehistoric and Romano-British periods. The possibility, however, that some features may be the result of Medieval settlement shift cannot be discounted.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.553).
