Full Description
April 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The parchmarks of a possible multiple ditched linear feature are visible on aerial photographs within an area of grassland on the cliff edge at Cromer (S1). The archaeological origin of this site is not definite.
The site is centred on approximately TG 2098 4243. The feature was only visible on one aerial photograph and was located towards the edge of an oblique aerial photograph; therefore the site had to be sketch plotted.
This possible site consists of three parallel ditches, relatively closely set, running diagonally towards the modern cliff edge. The vegetation appears to be grass, rather than arable and therefore the archaeological origin of these marks is not definite. Although the photograph was taken in 1976, a drought year, May seems quite early for such clear parchmarks to have developed. The cliff tops between Runton and Cromer are commonly used for parking, fairgrounds and various other temporary activities. It is therefore possible that these marks are the result of some recent activity at the site, rather than a reflecting a subsurface archaeological feature.
S. Massey (NMP), 07 April 2005.
