Summary

In 2004 the Norfolk Rapid Coastal Survey found fragments of World War Two concrete scattered along a 650m stretch of beach. All were located close to the base of the cliffs, having probably fallen from the cliff top. If they did come from the cliff top, it is likely that they were once part of World War Two military installations (NHER 26938, for example).

Map

May-November 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Inter-tidal survey (Environmental Zone 5), Contexts 46 and 1111:
Two scatters of reinforced and non-reinforced concrete fragments were found loose along the beach, forming a 20m wide spread at the base of the cliffs. It is unlikely that they were in-situ, having probably fallen from the cliff top.
They were the remains of a World War Two military installation (coastal battery NHER 26938).
See assessment report (S1) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.421).
J. Allen (NLA), 14 April 2005. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 July 2019.

These fragments of concrete almost certainly relate to the coastal battery (NHER 26938) recorded on the clifftop.
