Full Description
May-November 2004. Norfolk Rapid Coastal Zone Archaeological Survey.
Inter-tidal survey (Environmental Zone 7), Context 1043:
A circular wooden post embedded in estuarine mud was seen to the north of a modern sluice. It was probably part of a former sluice.
See assessment report (S1) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.421).
J. Allen (NLA), 14 April 2005. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 21 July 2019.
The “modern sluice” mentioned is stated by A. Scowen, NCC P&T, to be a flushing sluice where the water was impounded at high tide then released to scour the channel. Although the modern layout would make this seem difficult, (S2) shows that this was possible in the 19th century. The present sluice is a mixture of 19th century bricks and 20th century concrete with an old brick arch; there are one or two 18th century bricks with diagonal skintlings but it is quite possible these have been inserted in recent restorations. Generally the build is similar to that of the adjacent Coal Barn.
E. Rose (NLA), 8 June 2007.
