Summary

Two possible World War Two structures are visible on aerial photographs along the coast at Eccles. These include a possibly camouflaged, tall structure visible in 1940, which may have acted as an observation post, and an additional structure possibly exposed by the 1953 flood event.

Map

April 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Two possible World War Two structures are visible on aerial photographs along the coast at Eccles (S1-3). The site is centred on TG 4024 2964. These include a possible tall rectangular structure, just visible in 1940, largely camouflaged into the surrounding bank (S1) at TG 4021 2965. This structure may remain as late as 1946 (S2) as a possible structure with height can just about be discerned on the verticals, although nothing can clearly be seen. It is possible that this is a disguised defensive structure, possibly a gun emplacement, although the added height of the structure, when compared with the surrounding pillboxes (NHER 28747 & 32640), it may have had an observatory or watch post function.

To the immediate east at TG 4026 2964 is a small rectangular structural component, which appears to have been largely exposed by the 1953 storm event (S3). This is likely to represent a World War Two structure that had been set into the bank, which was undermined and exposed during the storm.
