NHER 27324 (Monument record) - Site of World War Two defensive structure

A World War Two defensive structure, incorporating anti-tank cubes, is visible on aerial photographs defending and blocking the North Gap at Eccles-on-Sea (S1-4). On the 1940 oblique aerial photographs the structures appears to be blocking the gap at approximately TG 4129 2887 (S1), but these have been moved by 1946 to the immediate west of the gap (S2).

The structures appear to include two large anti-tank cubes at the front, both measuring 1.5m across. These then appeared to have been set against a possible large rectangular concrete platform, although it is possible that this is relates to some existing steps or a slipway set into the gap. In 1946 (S2) there is a line of three smaller cubes visible to the rear of the group, all approximately 1m across. In 1952 and 1953 the group of structures are obviously being eroded and moved around by the sea (S3-4). After the floods of 1953 only two large front cubes remain (S4). They defences cannot clearly be identified on later aerial photographs, such as in 1965 (S5), although it is possible that they remain to the immediate west of the gap and have been covered by dunes.
